Conflict Norms Scorecard

Last updated: January 15, 2024

Use When

This tool is particularly useful when:

  • A new executive team is forming and needs to establish norms
  • A team is experiencing conflict and needs to reset
  • You're building psychological safety and want to make it concrete
  • You need to establish team norms but want to do it collaboratively

Steps

The Conflict Norms Scorecard helps teams assess and improve how they handle disagreement and conflict. Here's how to use it:

  1. Schedule a 2-hour session with your full team. This needs to be in person or on video where everyone can see each other.

  2. Each person rates the team on 10 conflict norms using a 1-5 scale. The norms include things like "We can disagree without it being personal" and "We address conflict directly rather than avoiding it."

  3. Discuss the gaps between individual ratings. Where do people see things differently? What does that tell you about the team's current state?

  4. Agree on target scores for each norm. Where do you want to be in 6 months? Be realistic but aspirational.

  5. Commit to specific behaviors that will move scores toward targets. For each norm, what will you do differently? Make it concrete and observable.

  6. Schedule follow-up to reassess in 4-6 weeks. This isn't a one-time exercise. Regular check-ins keep the norms alive.
